Fast-paced development is a regional phenomenon in the Middle East, and Oman is no exception. There are some exciting building and development projects already underway in the sultanate, and many more at planning stage.
Upgrade of Seeb International Airport

A new passenger terminal is to be constructed at the opposite end of the current runway. The new terminal will be bigger and better to cope with projected increases in tourism and business visitors. The existing terminal will remain, and function as a cargo terminal.

Upgrade of Salalah International Airport

New runways will be constructed to improve facilities at this airport, which is used predominantly for cargo, but also used for passenger flights particularly during the khareef season. The upgraded airport will have the capacity for two million passengers a year. Work on the runways is expected to begin sometime in 2006.

The Wave

This multi-million dollar venture will see the staggered completion of four zones of entertainment, leisure and residential facilities. The development involves significant land reclamation and will eventually spread for over seven kilometres along Oman's coastline near Muscat. Facilities will include a golf course, hotels and spas, conference facilities, a marina, a shopping centre, and a range of residential options available for purchase by both Omanis and expats.
Completion date: Phased construction began in 2006 and is expected to take six years.
Blue City

This ambitious project will create a whole new city over 35 square kilometres. The resort city will integrate tourism and residences, and will be home to around 200,000 people. Facilities will include a golf course, a tourist village and heritage museum, a sports stadium, luxury hotels, a harbour for cruise ships and plenty of shopping opportunities.
Completion date: Construction began in 2006 and will be completed in phases over the next 15 years.
